Dimitris Papaioannou, Greek legendary choreographer returning to Japan
The newly appointed Greek ambassador to Japan, Dimitris Caramitsos-Tziras, and the Greek embassy are focusing on introducing new cultural initiatives.
As the COVID-19 pandemic is settling down, Dimitris Papaioannou, a choreographer representing the contemporary Greek art scene, will return to Japan in July.
Dimitris Papaioannou directed the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2004 Athens Olympics. In recent years, he has been nominated as the first guest choreographer by the Wuppertal Dance Company after the death of Pina Bausch, making his presence stand out in the world art scene.
He came to Japan for the first time in 2019 and performed “THE GREAT TAMER”. It shocked Japanese performing arts fans. In this visit to Japan, the latest work “TRANSVERSE ORIENTATION” will be performed.
The work, which mixes Greek mythology, which can be said to be the roots of Dimitris Papaioannou, with the physical theater, and develops a spectacle that makes you feel as if you were lost in a large museum, is very novel. Lively tablows such as flashing lights, Greek mythological Minotaurs, men and women unfold in a mysterious and panoramic manner, spelling fantasy poems about human history along with Vivaldi’s music.
