Arabic Food Bazaar 2021 – Help Children In Gaza

A big and well-deserved kudos to the members of the Society of Wives of Arab Ambassadors and Heads of Missions in Japan (SWAAJ). This year’s event was held for a very important purpose, which was to provide assistance to the children in Gaza, following the more recent military conflict between Israel and Gaza, in Palestine.

Residence of the Ambassador of Algeria

This year’s event was held at the beautiful residence of the Ambassador of Algeria with its traditional Arab design and interior architecture. With a clear sky and summer temperatures, guests were able to enjoy a genuine middle eastern atmosphere. At the Arab Food Bazaar, each represented country had set up a booth to sell its own national food and some handicrafts. With an endless variety of home-cooked food available, everything sold out very quickly.

Due to the ongoing state of emergency still in effect in Tokyo, this year’s event was held for a smaller circle of guests and under strict Covid-19 health and safety guidelines. Nonetheless, the event was a great success, with countless Japanese supporters and members of the diplomatic community visiting the event over the course of the day.

Like all guests, guest of honor Kaori Kono, wife of former Foreign Minister Taro Kono, bought a lot of food from various Arab countries and took time to talk to the members of SWAAJ.

Members of SWAAJ and Mrs. Kono

Amira Bencharif, wife of the Algerian ambassador and president of SWAAJ, is a great lady with an amazing ability at organizing. As a person active in various charity projects in Tokyo, this year’s bazaar was very dear to hear:

“On behalf of the members of SWAAJ, and on my own behalf, I consider it our duty as women and mothers to do something towards these suffering children, through this humanitarian initiative. I would like to thank all the people in Japan who responded positively to our initiative to support these children.”

SWAAJ will donate the proceeds of this bazaar. Hence, 1,500,000 yen ($15,000) will be sent to the children in Gaza through UNRWA. The day was a success in any way. Congratulations to SWAAJ, its president Amira Bencharif and all its members.
