Conveying Gratitude Through Song: Latvian Ambassador and Madam Ilona Depart Japan
H.E. Mr. Zigmārs ZILGALVIS, Ambassador of Latvia to Japan, and his wife, Madam Ilona Zilgalve, are departing Japan after completing a four-year tenure. A farewell reception was held at the Latvian Embassy, drawing a crowd of friends and well-wishers.

During their visit, His Excellency Zigmārs Zilgalvis and his wife, Ilona, interacted warmly with many Japanese people. Through television appearances, visits to various parts of Japan, and exchanges with schools, groups, and organizations, they contributed significantly to raising awareness of Latvia among the Japanese public.
Latvia is also recognized as an attractive destination for investment, thanks to its highly skilled workforce, robust infrastructure, stable macroeconomy, and cost-efficiency. The advancements in the IT sector, in particular, have been remarkable. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the young ambassador, Latvia has gained significant recognition in Japan.
Latvians are often called a nation that sings. Throughout history, songs have accompanied almost every aspect of life for the Latvian nation—from work and family celebrations to important moments in their national story.
What better way to bid farewell to the ambassador and his wife—who have contributed so much to both Latvia and Japan—than through song? Accompanied by the beautiful voices of the choir Gaisma, the Japanese people conveyed their gratitude to the couple.

The Choir Gaisma frequently performs at Latvian Embassy events, delighting audiences with their magnificent singing. Established in 2008, Choir Gaisma is a mixed choir specializing in Latvian music. Their mission is to perform works of Latvian authors and participate in the “Latvian Song and Dance Festival”—a major national event recognized by UNESCO as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Every five years, tens of thousands of singers and dancers come together in a celebration that is one of the most important cultural events in Latvia. Since its establishment in 1873, the Latvian Song and Dance Festival has evolved through changing times while remaining a cherished cultural tradition for the Latvian people and continuing to unite Latvians around the world.

In 2023, the festival celebrated its 150th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its long and enduring history. The event has grown to such a scale that, on the final night, approximately 17,000 singers take to the outdoor stage for a five-hour closing concert, making it one of the world’s largest amateur choral events and a signature national celebration for Latvia. At this farewell reception, members of Gaisma appeared wearing traditional Latvian folk costumes and floral crowns, treating the audience to their beautiful voices.

Although Ambassador Zilgalvis and his wife, Ilona, are leaving Japan, the ties between Japan and Latvia will undoubtedly continue to deepen, fostering further economic cooperation in the future.
