Reliving the Magic of the Osaka Expo: Andrea Molteni Performs at the Italian Ambassador’s Residence
Andrea Molteni, a brilliant young Italian pianist active on the global stage, was recently invited to perform a piano recital at the residence of the Italian Ambassador to Japan.
The Italian Pavilion was undoubtedly one of the highlights of last year’s Osaka Expo. The daily concerts held within the pavilion generated significant buzz, offering audiences a firsthand experience of Italian culture and deeply moving them with the country’s rich artistic heritage. While many outstanding artists and musicians traveled to Japan for the event, Andrea Molteni stood out as one of the most captivating performers.
Molteni is currently one of the most acclaimed pianists of his generation, having studied at the prestigious International Piano Academy Lake Como—an elite institution where the legendary Martha Argerich serves as Honorary President and William Grant Naboré as Music Director.
He fully demonstrated his captivating artistry during the recital at the Italian Ambassador’s residence. His pianism—often described as transcending time and space—is consistently vibrant; he breathes such freshness into Baroque music that it feels as though it were composed in the modern era. His sound, grounded in impeccable technique, is at once dynamic and passionate, yet capable of great delicacy. His playing style reflects an interpretation of the piano not merely as a keyboard instrument, but also as a percussion instrument. It was easy to see why he has earned a reputation as an exceptional new breed of pianist from Italy.
This year marks the 160th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and Italy, making it a pivotal year for both nations. H.E. Mario Andrea Vattani, Ambassador of Italy to Japan, and his spouse, Yumiko, actively support Italian culture and share its depth with Japan by hosting concerts featuring talented young artists at the Ambassador’s residence, transforming it into a cultural salon. Yamaha Music Japan—which has also provided support for the Osaka Expo—shared the couple’s vision and joined in this initiative. Through the partnership between the Italian Embassy and Yamaha Music Japan, a magnificent Yamaha concert grand piano has been installed at the residence.

Ambassador Vattani will undoubtedly continue to introduce the authentic charm of Italy—a nation of music—to Japan.
