Bill Hersey’s Partyline October 1982

Friday the 8th… Typhoon Number Something is on its way and like about everyone I’ve talked to lately, I’ve about had it with this weather. I do have a ticket to Bali and if it doesn’t clear up a bit, I may well be ready to head for that beautiful little island about the time you read this.

On Tuesday the 28th friends got together for sayonara for the West Coast band The Sneakers at the Lexington. The guys had just finished a very successful con cert tour and were heading back to LA. the next day.

The crowd was a colorful mixture of models, local musicians and disco regulars. Jeff Baxter-producer of the group’s LPs came in with a video crew and filmed the evening which, because of a recent crackdown on closing hours, ended much earlier than every-one had hoped it would.

A swinging sayonara for the German rock group Scorpions

Sunday the 3rd was a day of contrast…from the classic movements of Sleeping Beauty as choreographed by Terry Hertmoreland and performed at Kanrai Kaikan by The Asami Maki Ballet to the heavy metal sounds of Germany’s skyrocketing group The Scorpions at Shinjuku’s Kosei Nenkin Kaikan.

Several members of the Asami Maki Ballet had gone to France to prepare for their roles in Sleeping Beauty and they excelled in their per- formances. The Scorpions had been on the road eight months and are a bunch of nice guys who are really enjoying their recent success. The show had some of the best lighting I’ve seen, the members’ stage pre- sence is dynamic and they know their music.

I got there a little late, so rather than fighting my way through the standing, jumping, gyrating fans, I stood in the back. Even so, with something like 60 speakers, it took me several hours after the concert to get my hearing back to normal. Several years ago, at a very hippie-type hangout in Amsterdam called Paradiso, I made the mistake of sitting right in front of speakers at a rock concert and couldn’t hear for two days. I’m around canned disco music every night and that doesn’t seem to bother me, but just let a dog bark somewhere in my neighbor- hood, and I’m ready to climb the walls. I guess it’s pretty much of an individual thing.

The German heavy metal group The Scorpions had their last Japan concert that evening and to help them celebrate the success of the tour, friends threw a sayonara party for them at The Lex. People there included CIC’s Kevin Hyson, Alpha Records’ Steven Jarmus and Hiroshi Katada, choreographer Roche Yoshihara (can she and her friend “D.J.” boogie!) and an assortment of interesting people from the music and fashion world. Takeshi Noda, editor of the popular weekly magazine Heibon Punch was also there, and I really enjoyed talking with him about old times. I was fashion editor of the magazine for three years.

Folio Model Agency Manager Yoshio Kato and Fumiko Saito (who used to work for Folio) on their marriage Oct. 16. After the wedding, about 100 of Tokyo’s beautiful people helped them celebrate at a party at The Samba Club in Roppongi. The couple had been married curlier that day Ina ceremony at the Tokyo Hilton. The next day the handsome couple left for their honeymoon in Hawaii.

However, that evening at The Samba Club in Roppongi, the place was filled with Folio’s beautiful models and their friends to help Folio Manager Yoshio Kato and his new bride, the former Fumiko Saito. There were some really knock-out looking people there that evening … models from all over the world, and faces that you frequently see on the covers of publications such as Vogue and G.Q.

Their friends included some of Japan’s top photographers, make-up artists, hair stylists and trendsetters. Folio’s President Hiroshi Aoyagi was there, and Paul Rose, Folio general manager (who had just flown in) also made the scene. Paul has been traveling a great deal, and his wife Annette will be leaving for Hawaii soon. She’s expecting and Paul will join her in December.

Baroness Philippine de Rothschild through a very considerate handwritten letter thanking me for some photos I had sent her. “They’re lovely souvenirs of Japan. . . a fascinating and enchanting country that I hope to return before too long,” she wrote. A nice and very much-appreciated gesture from a very busy, dynamic and thoughtful woman.
