Where Japan Meets Romania: A Cultural Dialogue Through Gardens, Arts, and Fashion in Tokyo

The Romanian Institute of Culture (ICR) Tokyo and the Romanian Embassy in Japan, at the invitation of the Romanian National Institute for Cultural Heritage (Institutului Național de Patrimoniu România), hosted “Rendez-vous aux jardins” in partnership with the French Ministry of Culture, an international event celebrating garden culture—the only one of its kind in Asia.

Based on the themes of Japanese and Romanian culture, the event aimed to create a new cultural resonance through the encounter of traditional arts, featuring experiential workshops and live performances.

The event was held over two days.

Day 1, themed “A Space Where Romanian and Japanese Cultures Resonate,” included workshops on calligraphy, ikebana (flower arrangement), and Western calligraphy.

On the second day, under the theme of “Traditional Art of Romania and Japan: Differences and Similarities,” workshops were held on traditional Romanian crafts and traditional Japanese crafts such as Yuzen dyeing, and a fashion show was also held that fused Romanian folk costumes “Ie” with Japanese kimonos.

This event, befitting the Romanian Embassy in Japan’s commitment to the Romanian community, attracted a large number of Romanians living in Japan. Among the attendees there were many Romanians with Japanese families, and this cultural fusion and accessible workshop proved useful in passing on Romanian culture to the next generation.
