Inaugural “Dinu Lipatti Tokyo” Music Festival Held: Honoring the Legendary Romanian Pianist

The legend of Dinu Lipatti—a genius pianist born in Romania who passed away prematurely at the age of 33 due to Hodgkin’s lymphoma, despite the great expectations the world held for him—remains as vibrant today as ever.

Lipatti earned high acclaim for his interpretations of Romantic-era piano works, including those by Schumann and Chopin. Yet, even today, his name is perhaps most closely associated with his masterful performance of “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”—a piece originally composed by Bach as a cantata and later arranged for piano by Myra Hess.

To honor this legendary pianist, the inaugural “Dinu Lipatti Tokyo” music festival was organized through the collaboration of the Romanian Cultural Institute in Tokyo, the Embassy of Romania in Japan, and the Min-On Concert Association.

Reflecting the supreme pianism that Lipatti once shared with the world, the festival opened with a commemorative concert at the Min-On Music Museum (Min-On Culture Center). The performance featured Ryugo Yoshino, who was awarded the “Embassy of Romania Prize” in the piano category at this year’s 22nd Romania International Music Competition—an event organized by the Japan-Romania Music Association.

From the following day onward, the festival presented a diverse program that extended well beyond the confines of classical music. The festival featured a succession of performers representing the best of contemporary Romania—including pianist Constantin Sandu, the Pitești Philharmonic String Quartet, Liviu Indricău and Andrei Petre, two tenors from the Bucharest National Opera, Diana Jipa and Ștefan Doniga-a violin-and-piano duo, FilJazz a jazz ensemble with the soloist Anita Petruescu and Doina Argeșului, a group performing traditional Romanian folk music—all of whom brought great energy to the event and delighted the Japanese audience.

This marked the inaugural “Dinu Lipatti Tokyo” Music Festival, and it has left me eagerly anticipating the second edition next year. I look forward to being swept up once again by the fresh musical breeze blowing in from Romania—a true powerhouse of music.
