Maria Watanabe at Mashiko Clayworks Exhibition by Hersey Shiga

A solo exhibition by a Brazilian-born ceramist, Maria Watanabe. Maria Watanabe moved to Japan in 1982 and first came into contact with the art of ceramic art and began her training. She emigrated to Mashiko, she studied under Shoji Hamada’s son, Shinsaku Hamada, and she was the first woman to build a hole kiln in Mashiko. She then suffered disasters such as her hole kiln was destroyed by the earthquake, but she rebuilt the hole kiln in 2020 again and continues her pottery activities.
