Experience the Liberating Spirit of Africa Up Close Bazaar : Hosted by the Association of African Ambassadors’ Wives (AWAAJ)
In the grand hall of the Ambassador’s Residence in Nakameguro, Tokyo, African ambassadors’ wives set up colorful booths. The selection of goods was incredibly vibrant, creating a lively atmosphere like a treasure chest overflowing. Surprisingly, though not widely known in Japan, many women in African countries are considered knitting masters. At this bazaar, exquisite hand-knitted cloaks, coats, and jackets were among the items for sale.

Furthermore, given the recent popularity of African prints in Japan, many works were exhibited in collaboration with Japanese design and sewing. Adorable African print kitchen goods and traditional African beadwork also caught the eye of visitors.

Speaking of Africa, the cuisine is particularly noteworthy. As it’s a hot continent, there are many dishes that seem to provide stamina. Okra(lady finger) is a very common vegetable in African countries, and many dishes cleverly utilize its slimy texture. Surprisingly, many of the dishes suited Japanese palates perfectly, leaving us with a strong desire to eat them again.

Through the bazaar, where we felt the warmth and generosity of the people, marveled at the delicate handicrafts, and enjoyed delicious food, we were able to rediscover the charm of African countries. We eagerly await the next event.
