Celebrating Ireland’s National Day in Japan: A Grand Gathering at the Prestigious Okura Hotel

On March 15th , 2024, the Irish Embassy in Japan hosted a grand reception at the renowned Okura Hotel in Tokyo to commemorate St. Patrick ‘s Day, Ireland’s national holiday. The prestigious event brought together a distinguished gathering of guests from various sectors, including commerce, diplomacy, and the Irish community in Japan.

The evening commenced with a warm welcome from Ambassador H.E. Mr. Damien Cole, who proudly announced that Ireland’s presence in Japan is growing stronger than ever, with over 20 events taking place nationwide to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

He then introduced the guest of honor, Ireland’s Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, Mr. Roderic O’Gorman T.D., who expressed his gratitude for the warm hospitality and spoke about the importance of the strong partnership between Ireland and Japan. One of his main mission on his Japan tour was launching the concept for Ireland for the upcoming World Expo 2024, hosted in Osaka, Kansai.

H.E. Mr. Yuji Yamamoto, President of the Japan-Ireland Parliamentary Friendship League, shared his personal connection to Ireland, expressing his grandson’s desire to study there. He also highlighted the deep friendship and shared values between the two countries, which have fostered a close partnership in various areas.

As the speeches concluded, Ambassador Cole, Mr. Yamamoto and his guests raised a toast, wishing all a “Beannachtaí na Féile Pádraig,” or a Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

The evening was made more memorable with a captivating performance by the world-renowned Irish dance ensemble, Riverdance, who were touring Japan to celebrate their 25th anniversary.

Guests were treated to a full buffet featuring a blend of Japanese and Irish cuisine, as well as the beloved Guinness stout with its signature draft station. Guests were entertained with traditional Irish music played by a live band, setting a festive atmosphere for the evening.
