Residence Public Tulip Garden Viewing

Friday, April 8th and Sunday, April 10th

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Japan opened its doors to the public for a viewing of the Residence’s Tulip Garden and the Ambassador’s residence on Friday, April 8th and Sunday, April 10th, 2022.

A comment from Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Japan, Peter van der Vliet:

“I am very happy to know that the tulip, the symbol of the Netherlands, is loved by many people in Japan. We would be delighted to share and enjoy the arrival of spring with you through this public tulip garden viewing.”

People who had been waiting for this open house lined up early in the morning on both days. The line was very long and continued to Kamiyacho Station, which is about 350m from the embassy. From the opening at 10am, Ambassador Peter van der Vliet welcomed many people to the garden of the Ambassador’s residence and the interior of the residence.

It has been about 100 years since the first building was destroyed by the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 and it was rebuilt in 1928. The building, which still retains its traditional rustic atmosphere, is decorated with traditional and contemporary design furniture and artwork. Including works by the 19th century Dutch painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag as well as red and blue chairs by Gerrit Rietveld. The furniture and artwork create a special atmosphere which blends the characteristics of Japan and the Netherlands.

The number of visitors reached about 2,400 on April 8 and 3,000 on April 10. They all enjoyed the Dutch atmosphere while walking in the garden and promenade where 70 kinds of beautiful tulips bloomed.

We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Ambassador Peter van der Vliet and the staff of the Embassy for organizing such an event with Japanese people. It was wonderful! We look forward to enjoying the event again next year.
